Genotyping for crops

Genetic analyses are particularly valuable for modern breeding methods. A number of requirements are placed on the genotyping arrays used for this purpose.

Arrays should:

These points are taken into account in our optimised genotyping procedures to provide breeders with high quality data for a large number of samples at low cost.

We offer genetic testing for these crops

  • Wheat
  • Maize
  • Soybeans
  • Cotton
  • Brassica (oilseed rape, vegetables)
  • Barley
  • Sunflower
  • Rice
  • Solanaceae (tomato, pepper, potato, etc.)
  • Cucurbitaceae (cucumber, melon, watermelon, etc.)
  • Other plants (e.g. oats, rye, triticale, pea, bean, vine, sorghum, lolium, cauliflower, carrot, onion, lettuce, asparagus, apple, cherry, strawberry, etc.)

Overview of established genotyping arrays

Technological platforms for genotyping

Axiom Arrays

We use the Axiom array platform for plates with 96 and 384 samples. It is mainly used for genotyping of large arrays with more than 100,000 markers. On this system we offer the analysis of all publicly available arrays as well as customer-specific arrays. In addition, we have developed a number of our own large Affymetrix arrays, e.g.

  • Wheat 135K
  • 30-80K arrays for all major vegetables (cucumber, melon, watermelon, tomato, lettuce, onion, asparagus, carrot)

Illumina Arrays

Our experts at TraitGenetics have been involved in the development of numerous published genotyping arrays for crops (e.g. wheat, barley, brassica, cotton, pepper, tomato, etc.). We use Illumina Infinium genotyping for high throughput applications (HD, HTS, XT) for marker numbers between 5,000 and 100,000.

In our molecular biology laboratories, we work with all publicly available Illumina plant genotyping arrays (e.g. for field crops, vegetables, fruits), but also use in-house developed, optimised genotyping arrays for important crop species. These have been specifically designed for breeding applications.
