PFAS in the environment

Analysis of PFAS in environmental samples

PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances) are a group of more than 10,000 man-made chemicals that have water-, grease- and stain-repellent properties. PFASs are found in a wide range of everyday products, including fire-fighting foams (A3F), stain-resistant fabrics, textiles, carpets and cosmetics.

These chemicals do not exist in nature and degrade very slowly; neither water, light nor bacteria accelerate their degradation.

With increasing production and release of PFAS into the environment, PFAS accumulate and can have negative effects on the ecosystem and human and animal health.

PFASs can be absorbed through food, drinking water, respiration or the skin.

The Drinking Water Ordinance (TrinkwV) and the REACH Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006) regulate, among other things, the handling of so-called perfluorinated and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS).

We carry out PFAS analyses in all matrices from soil to drinking water, groundwater and wastewater to products. In addition, our air experts analyse air samples for PFAS occurrences.

Innovative analytics

At SGS, we have developed and established an overall concept for PFAS testing:

PFASafe - Next level analysis

This novel 3-level analysis combines different techniques and provides a comprehensive picture of PFAS in soil, (drinking) water, ambient air, consumer products and food.

While conventional PFAS analyses are limited to about 40 to 60 components (1 % of the total number of PFAS compounds), the PFASafe - Next level analysis covers all PFAS components.

Advantages of PFAS analysis by SGS

We are world leaders in the analysis of PFAS.

For over 20 years, SGS has been your expert in the testing and analysis of PFAS compounds.

PFASafe - Next level analysis is a new testing strategy that focuses on all PFAS components, not just those already known and banned in Europe.

The testing services can be used in combination with our innovative TOP (Total Oxidisable Precursor) analysis to provide an accurate and precise measurement of the potential for environmental contamination.

We also offer the determination of the sum parameter AOF (adsorbable organic fluorine) in our laboratories.

With PFASafe - Next level analysis you can expand your range of applications. Contact your local SGS office for more information on PFAS testing.

Analysis spectrum

We offer analyses for a wide range of substances, including:

  • Perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids
  • Perfluoroalkylsulfonates
  • Perfluorooctane sulfonamide
  • Perfluorooctane sulfonamidoacetic acids
  • Perfluorooctane sulfonamide ethanols
  • Fluorotelomer sulfonates
